Paul, this is one of the best summaries of Vitamin D I have ever read! In particular, I appreciate your recommendations about dosing of Vit D and the importance of taking Vitamin D with Vitamin K and magnesium. Thanks for your excellent summary!

Oh yeah but I think I should try to do some every day. I did some today and am feeling better and I did some yesterday and my head ache went away. This time of year I thought the days were long enough not to worry about it but I ended up being indoors too much and probably still a bit low from the long winter to not be keeping up the routine. I heard 15 minutes a day was good but I only did once a week so I am going to increase.

Vitamin D and Cancer: An Historical Overview of the Epidemiology and Mechanisms

Abstract

This is a narrative review of the evidence supporting vitamin D's anticancer actions. The first section reviews the findings from ecological studies of cancer with respect to indices of solar radiation, which found a reduced risk of incidence and mortality for approximately 23 types of cancer. Meta-analyses of observational studies reported the inverse correlations of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] with the incidence of 12 types of cancer. Case-control studies with a 25(OH)D concentration measured near the time of cancer diagnosis are stronger than nested case-control and cohort studies as long follow-up times reduce the correlations due to changes in 25(OH)D with time. There is no evidence that undiagnosed cancer reduces 25(OH)D concentrations unless the cancer is at a very advanced stage. Meta-analyses of cancer incidence with respect to dietary intake have had limited success due to the low amount of vitamin D in most diets. An analysis of 25(OH)D-cancer incidence rates suggests that achieving 80 ng/mL vs. 10 ng/mL would reduce cancer incidence rates by 70 ± 10%. Clinical trials have provided limited support for the UVB-vitamin D-cancer hypothesis due to poor design and execution. In recent decades, many experimental studies in cultured cells and animal models have described a wide range of anticancer effects of vitamin D compounds. This paper will review studies showing the inhibition of tumor cell proliferation, dedifferentiation, and invasion together with the sensitization to proapoptotic agents. Moreover, 1,25-(OH)2D3 and other vitamin D receptor agonists modulate the biology of several types of stromal cells such as fibroblasts, endothelial and immune cells in a way that interferes the apparition of metastases. In sum, the available mechanistic data support the global protective action of vitamin D against several important types of cancer.

When I was a child my mother always played with me outside in the sun, not in the house. All of our family activities were always done outside.

When I got older and wasn’t feeling well or was in a bad mood my mother would say, go outside and get some vitamin D in your head.

To this day I still remember those words and still do it when I am not feeling well and still spend most of my days outside in the sun.

I think my mother knew something that in the last few years I am beginning to now fully understand.

Agree.. many cant get enough sun and it also depends on your latitude.

Just go outside and stop living in the dark like a bridge troll, and stop slathering yourself with toxic sunscreens. Tons of evidence that those with the most sun exposure have the lowest morality rates (even with a skin cancer diagnosis.) Vit D is just a proxy for sun exposure. Supplementing with D3 is just introducing noise into the signal. It's the beneficial effects of sunlight (infrared, UV-B and likely others as yet not identified) that stimulate the mitochondria. Healthy mitochondria= healthy human.

Oh no . Not this again. The dose in rat poison is thousands time the dose used in humans... the dose makes the poison. This is the biggest non-sense circulating. Vitamin D in the doses we suggest is incredibly safe.

Unlike what Dr Makis advertises not all patients with cancer respond to this metabolic therapy.. and so I have a staged step up process when treatment is failing.. we still have a few trick up our sleeve.

Brilliant article, happy to see Coimbra Protocol referenced.

Cancer can apparently cause increased resistance at Vitamin D receptor sites, just like autoimmune diseases (including MS), and infections like EBV, Borrelia, explaining the need for very high D3 doses to overcome resistance.

The Shine on Scotland campaign started by a 13 year old in 2009 to address the high incidence of MS in the pop. Dr. Ebers team evidenced genetic link of low D and MS.

I am just amazed at the work you’ve done here, Doc. This information has largely been MISSING in my own family doctor’s repertoire, and is consonant with my own study and understanding of the critical importance of maintaining a decent serum level of Vitamin D. Thank you for this treasure trove. Vitamin D deficiency is a national emergency.

Excellent work on the supplement side of things, but absolutely NO mention of SUN MADE Vitamin D? This is clearly FAR SUPERIOR! Yes, supplements raise blood levels of vitamin D, but they cannot replicate the full biological effects of sunlight itself, including nitric oxide release, circadian regulation, mitochondrial signalling, dopamine and serotonin production, immune modulation, infrared exposure, and synchronisation of the body’s internal clock, all of which play critical roles in metabolic health, mood, inflammation, and cancer protection. This may help explain why studies repeatedly show that regular sensible sun exposure is often more strongly associated with reduced cancer risk and improved health outcomes than vitamin D supplementation alone.

Hey Paul, thanks for the very comprehensive article. I have read that magnesium plays a very key role in the body’s ability to utilise any vitamin D, whether supplied via supplements or synthesised by our own bodies from exposure to sunlight!

Dr Chris Martenson initially mentioned in mid 2020, mentioned that high serum levels of vitamin-d had favorable cov outcomes, so we focused on this, getting ours up to ~80 ng/ml, instead of the experiment.
